Location

Greenaway is located in the heart of the Highlands near Aviemore. It is situated on a small country lane surrounded by the moors, pine forests, mountains and lochs of Scotland.

Dulnain Bridge is the nearest village just over half a mile away, here you can find a few shops,post office, a restaurant and a garage.

Carrbridge is 7 miles away and this is where they hold the annual world championship porridge making competition! Aside from the fine porridge you can find a bakers, shops, pubs, bowling green, and restaurants.

Aviemore is also 7 miles away, with banks, shops, cafes, outdoor adventure stores and ski hire. It is a lively place in the evening with both bars and the more traditional Scottish pub.

Walking, Climbing and Winter Sports in the Cairngorms

In the area of Greenaway and Aviemore, the views are dominated by the mountain range of the Cairngorms. The granite mass of the Cairngorms is well known among walkers, skiers, climbers and all outdoor activists. Often featured in climbing and walking magazines, the Cairngorms offer a multitude of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Whether walking, mountaineering, skiing, snow boarding, rock climbing or ice climbing is your idea of fun, the Cairngorms are for you!

In winter the Cairngorms are often covered in a mass of snow offering some great skiing, snowboarding. For the less active you can view the amazing mountainous landscape by going  by the funicular railway (this replaced the the Cairngorm chairlift and is now open all year round). This takes you to a restaurant with stunning views and the Cairngorm Plateau.

Cairngorms translates to Blue Mountain as apparently the summit of the Cairngorms looks blue from a distance. Being a munro, Cairngorm is 4084 feet / 1245 metres high, the plateau being made of pink granite.

For "munro baggers" the Cairngorms have almost 50 peaks over 3000 feet and for the really keen mountaineers some more than 4000 feet high!

Apart from skiing in the winter months, the Cairngorms offer great climbing, both rock and ice. Other outdoor pursuits local to the Cairngorms and Aviemore include mountain biking, water sports including sailing at Loch Morlich, salmon fishing and golf.

At the Cairngorm Mountain Ski Centre you can hire skis, boots, snowboards etc and have lessons given by ski instructors. Whether you are a beginner or experienced the Cairngorms offer a range of slopes from Green to Black standards.
